The Conscious Cocktail (Zero-Proof)

A book-and-beverage pairing for word nerds! Fellow author Amy Avery (The Longest Autumn) was kind enough to create a recipe for a cocktail to go with The Conscious Style Guide. She said, “Since it’s a style guide about language, I wanted to try a non-alcoholic riff on a well-known cocktail called the Last Word. The original has gin, an herbal liqueur, lime juice, and a cherry liqueur. I swapped out ingredients but tried to hit some of the same flavor notes.” Thanks, Amy! I love the use of juniper berries in place of gin. Look for them at a spice shop, grocery store, or online.

Ingredients

10 dried juniper berries
1/4 tsp matcha or 3/4 oz of green tea, brewed strong
2.5 oz simple syrup
1.5 oz tart unsweetened cherry juice
1 small lime, cut into small wedges
Optional: cocktail cherry

Directions

  1. Muddle juniper, lime, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Really crush it to break up the juniper and get the oils out of the lime peels.
  2. Add cherry juice and matcha/tea.
  3. Add ice.
  4. Shake well.
  5. Double strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled cocktail glass.
  6. Optional: garnish with a cocktail cherry on a pick.
